EYE HEALTH

Childrens Eye Health

Clear vision isn't something children ask for. They often assume everyone sees the way they do. It's something we have to look for - together.

EYE HEALTH STARTS YOUNG

Children rarely complain about their vision. Not because nothing is wrong - but because they have nothing to compare it to.

Blurred vision feels normal to them. They assume everyone sees that way.

This is why children's eye examinations are not something to wait for. They are something to schedule.

SIGNS TO WATCH FOR

Signs your child may need an eye test

Symptom 1: Too Close, Too Often

A child who consistently sits very close to screens or books is likely compensating for blurred distance vision. It feels normal to them - but it's one of the earliest and most reliable signs that something needs checking.

Symptom 2: Squinting or Tilting

Squinting temporarily sharpens a blurred image by reducing the amount of light entering the eye. If your child squints regularly or tilts their head to see clearly, their eyes are working harder than they should be.

Symptom 3: Losing Their Place

Skipping lines, losing their place mid-sentence or re-reading the same line repeatedly are often misread as attention issues. In many cases the cause is visual - the eyes struggling to track text accurately across a page.

Symptom 4: After-School Headaches

Headaches that arrive reliably after a school day are rarely coincidence. Hours of close work and board-reading place significant demand on young eyes - particularly when an uncorrected prescription is making that effort harder than it needs to be.

Symptom 5: Rubbing Their Eyes

Frequent eye rubbing is the body's response to visual fatigue or irritation. In children it often signals that the eyes are working too hard to maintain focus - and is worth taking seriously if it happens regularly throughout the day.

Symptom 6: Avoiding Reading

A child who resists books, avoids close work or disengages in class is not always uninterested. Often they are avoiding an activity that causes them discomfort or strain. A simple eye test can be the turning point that changes their relationship with learning entirely.

OUR APPROACH TO YOUNG PATIENTS

Care That's Built Around Children

Built For Children

Our examinations are fully adapted for young patients - including children who cannot yet read a standard chart. We use picture-based techniques and move at a pace that keeps your child comfortable and engaged throughout. It takes around thirty minutes and feels nothing like a clinical visit.

Specialist Training

One of our resident optometrists holds specialist training in paediatric eye care. This means your child is assessed by someone who understands how children's eyes develop, how conditions present differently in young patients and how to communicate findings clearly to parents. No Guesswork

If we find something, we tell you plainly what it is, what it means for your child's development, and exactly what the next step looks like. If glasses are recommended, we help your child choose frames they'll actually want to wear. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is assumed.

What every parent deserves to know...

1 in 5 school-age children has an undiagnosed vision problem. Most of them have never complained about their sight. A child who receives the right prescription at the right age can catch up quickly. A child whose problem goes undetected often doesn't.

We've been caring for Harare's families since 1965.

Frequently Asked Questions...

How early should my child have their first eye exam?

We recommend a first examination before your child starts school - ideally between 3 - 4 yrs. At this stage, we can identify conditions that are far easier to manage early than later. There is no minimum age. If you have a concern about an infant or toddler, book an appointment and we will assess their visual responses appropriately.

My child hasn't complained about vision. Does that mean everything is fine?

Not necessarily - and this is the most important thing for parents to understand. Children rarely complain about blurred vision because they have nothing to compare it to. What feels normal to them may not be. A routine examination is the only reliable way to know what your child's eyes are actually doing.

What if my child is too young to read a chart?

We use picture-based and symbol charts specifically designed for pre-readers and young children. Our optometrists are trained to assess visual function without relying on verbal responses - so age and reading ability are never barriers to a thorough examination.
